Willson Training Centre is part of Centacare Tasmania and has been operating as
a training organisation since 1981 making it one of the oldest training organisations in Tasmania.
Originally operating from the grounds of Mount St Canice in Sandy Bay, Willson Training Centre
recently moved to new premises in Tower Road New Town.
Willson Training Centre is named after Tasmania's first Catholic Bishop, Robert William Willson.
Robert William Willson was born in Lincoln, England, in 1794. After ordination in 1824 he worked
in Nottingham for 18 years. In 1842 he was consecrated the first bishop of the newly created diocese of Hobart Town.

Bishop Willson arrived in the colony in 1844. His chief concern was ministering to the convict population; he was
a leader in advocating reforms in penal discipline and a more humane treatment of the mentally ill. After the
cessation of transportation in 1853, his principal work became the building up of the Church in parishes. He
returned to England in ill-health in 1865 and died at Nottingham on 30th June, 1866.
Bishop Willson had always hoped to end his days in Tasmania. One hundred and forty years later, the
Tasmanian Catholics are set to grant Bishop Willson's final wish with procedures in place to bring his remains home.
